'Street in Porto'
20" x 16" acrylic impasto on canvas. March 2007.
From a photo I took in Porto in November 06.

I first created an impasto by applying a heavy structure gel with a palette knife, then painted in a more detailed style over the top using bristle and sable brushes.
The resulting painting is therefore not only detailed, but also very heavily textured - the paint protrudes out of the canvas.  When building the textured layer I paid particular attention to the horizontal and vertical lines that make up the composition, and to forms such as the balconies.
