The children's classes have now been running for since autumn 2009. The children range in
age from 5 to 11. So far we have covered the basics of line and tone drawing, life drawing,
and many different techniques of painting.
Examples of things the children have mastered during this time:
* How to make a line, and then from that an object, appear to rise from the paper and
recede back into it.
* How to get the proportions of a life drawing correct, and to avoid twisting and accidental
changes in scale
* How to use tone to signify depth.
* Basic colour theory
* An enormous variety of different effects that can be achieved with traditional materials, and
indeed with anything that will make a mark.... Yes, we do get messy. And yes, it's great fun!
And most importantly;
* To think creatively, and to think, draw and paint expressively and with confidence
* That art is not a process, it is a conversation.
* To see beauty and potential in every mark, whether deliberate or accidental, and to learn
from and react to happy and unhappy accidents in a positive, creative and considered way.
I am absolutely delighted that the children love the lessons. They have got their poor parents
to drive out through storms and floods, and even in one case to delay a holiday, (No, I don't
suggest anybody should do that!) All because they want to learn, and to learn more. I am
genuinely thrilled by the great strides of progress each one of them has made, and their (often
completely new-found) confidence in their ability to express themselves and their ideas
confidently and effectively on paper. Meanwhile, their parents thoroughly enjoy the chance to
stroll along the Grand Canal (in front of the house), relax with the paper, or to shop in nearby
Athy in peace and quiet.
The cost is EUR 10 per week, paid only on the weeks that you do turn up. I believe that
most classes will charge for a block of lessons in advance, but that does not seem as fair to
me. All materials are provided. Parents are more than welcome to sit in on the lesson, to
relax in the lounge or the garden, or to leave and come back at the end of the lesson. It's
your hour, folks...

NEW: Adult's art classes
Drawing and painting taught by professional artist.
Following the success of the children's classes, I am now
launching lessons for adults.
The teaching is individually tailored to the abilities, styles
and aspirations of each student. The lessons are suitable
for all ages and abilities from absolute beginner to
advanced.
1 1/2 hr lessons EUR 15
Sat 10:30am - noon.
Other times available for groups of five or more.

At the time of writing, these classes are in their very
early days. The aims of the classes are similar to those
of the children's classes (see left), But the teaching is, of
course, much more in depth. Again, having fun with the
materials is a high priority.
I am genuinely excited at the launch of these classes,
and will post more information here as the group
develops.
